One of the ways great heart energy is developed is through alchemy, the fantasy from the middle ages that iron could be turned into gold. It did not work with metal, but it works with people. Suffering, failure, and violence can, with hard work and grace, become the fuel for a new, heart-centered consciousness. Personal pain can create great compassion for others who suffer. Personal struggle can reveal what is really important, leading to a life of service and connection with others. And the very act of acknowledging our darker side can create awareness that people are so much more than their personal thoughts and circumstances.
Will, you are an example of alchemy. Your difficult path led you to the Gangster Disciples and that life of violence and conflict. But you have used your experiences—deeply aided by mentors and friends-- to develop a life of service to others. You got an education, graduating from the City, Inc, and attending 2 years of college. At the City, Inc, and later at Pillsbury Neighborhood Services you have served many others, especially young people, single fathers raising children, people in need of housing, and ex-offenders—a group perhaps the most inspired by your personal story. And this is not really work for you at all. You feel that God has called you to this work, which is always the source of powerful heart energy.
Thank you for your service. Thank you for being an example to us that alchemy can create great heart energy. Thank you for the hope you give others that they too can overcome the past.Congratulations!
