You are a special person, Liz, who perfectly exemplifies the spirit of Sullivan Ballou. We know that you are an athlete, a former soccer player and current golfer, who has struggled for years with bone cancer and entered high school in a wheel chair. But far from discouraging you or souring your attitude, your disability has given you even more opportunity to share your generous heart with others. You have become a spokesperson for the Children’s Disability Fund, you are a staunch supporter of the Starry Night Prom for people with disabilities, and you speak from the heart to others about the challenges and rewards of sports. Despite exhaustion from treatment, pain, and limited mobility, you unfailingly offer words of hope and encouragement to your classmates and regular service through the LaSallian Ministry program. People are inspired by your goodness, courage, and optimism.
These characteristics and conduct of yours, Liz, are what come from letting your heart energy shine into the world without being dimmed by selfishness, personal gain, or private agendas. We expect that throughout your life you will be an example to others who brings constant gifts to those around you. Think from time to time of Sullivan Ballou and know that you are in good company. It has been a privilege to get to know you.
Congratulations!
