Youth gangs have been a growing problem in Minneapolis. The problem is difficult, because gangs meet deep unmet needs of many young men in our community—for companionship, for purpose, for safety, for an outlet for youthful vigor when many of the socially acceptable channels are unavailable. Yet the problem must be solved, because the creativity and positive energy of these young men are desperately needed by their families and communities.
You have shown yourself to have the courage to leave the gang life and to start making those badly needed positive contributions. Moreover, you have devoted yourself, through your work with Urban Youth Conservation and on your own, to encouraging other young men to make the same brave choice. We have heard stories about how you have been out on streetcorners in the rain pulling young gang members in to midnight basketball and other steps toward a more productive life.
You have decided on your own to walk this path; your courage and dedication to your mission come straight from the heart. For this reason, you are just the kind of person the Sullivan Ballou Fund seeks to recognize and affirm. We are inspired and humbled by your example.
Congratulations!
